External failure cost

This refers to the costs incurred when products or services fail to conform to requirements, or satisfy customer needs, after they have been delivered.

External failure costs include the costs repair or replacement, customer complaint handling, warranty costs, legal claims.  They also include the cost of lost future sales as a result of previous poor service.

External failure cost is a term normally found in management accounting and performance management.
