Horizontal diversification

This refers to the marketing strategy of developing new products or services which, while not related to existing product or service lines, might appeal to the existing customer base.

For example a company selling a quality branded car may also develop branded fashion ware; similarly retail chains targeting affluent customers may also introduce financial services.

Horizontal diversification is a term normally found in strategic management.
